The Opportunity

RHEON LABS is an innovative, fast-growing, technology business seeking to define and own a new market sector called ‘Energy Control’ with a ground-breaking energy absorbing technology. The initial focus will be on the exciting and diverse branded sports sector, with future applications extending to the electronics, defence, PPE, medical and automotive markets. We now have an opportunity for an experienced Development Engineer to join our growing design & development group. This role is part of the emerging ‘Leadership Group’ and will report to a member of the Management Team.

The Role

The Senior Development Engineer’s key responsibilities will be to:

  • Lead and manage a team of Development Engineers across multiple product categories.
  • Train and develop recent graduate engineers.
  • Provide junior members of the team with opportunities to grow and take on more responsibility as they progress through the organisation
  • Ensure that product development projects are planned and effectively managed and coach others to develop good project management skills
  • Liaise with other key resources within Rheon Labs (e.g. the workshop, CAD and testing teams) to ensure projects are delivered in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Play a key role in multiple product development projects that take products from inception to launch.
  • Contribute to the concept-creation, detailed specification, prototyping, testing, detailed design and transfer to production of new product solutions.
  • Work in a multi-disciplinary team of engineers, garment/fabric technologists and designers.
  • Liaise with the client’s own development and testing resources as part of the development process.

Job requirements

Job requirements

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has a good engineering degree from a top university;
  • Has at least 3-5 years of experience in a multi-disciplinary product development environment, ideally with experience in technical footwear;
  • Has either received some management training or has demonstrable management experience;
  • Is proficient in the following software: Rhino and or Solid Works. Experience in Python, Matlab or Fusion 360 would be beneficial.
  • Is highly proficient in using Microsoft Office;
  • Has experience of designing injection mouldings in engineering plastics/rubbers and is aware of some of the production issues/challenges of the injection moulding industry;
  • Has experience of design control, data/file management, documentation version/control;
  • Is organised, has excellent attention to detail, and can be relied upon to deliver;
  • Is a natural ‘problem-solver’ with excellent, practical ‘hands-on’ skills that match their theoretical prowess;
  • Appreciates the critical role of specification, testing and validation as part of a structured development programme;
  • Will be flexible and adaptable as demands and priorities change and remains good humoured under pressure;
  • Is genuinely excited by the high-performance sports apparel sector;
  • Is motivated by learning and developing;
  • Is proactive and takes responsibility for tasks whilst having a positive, "can-do" attitude at all times;
  • Can think critically and creatively;
  • Cares about the detail as well as the "big-picture" and recognises the critical role of ‘quality’ in design and production;
  • Has excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Is available to travel to meet with customers and development partners – most likely in North America, Canada, mainland Europe and Asia.
